East Africa

My experience in East Africa is quite limited. As part of the Strengthening Higher Education Stakeholder Relations in Africa project (2011) I attended meetings in Kampala and met with colleagues from across the region, particularly Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania. In Kenya I visited elementary and secondary schools in Meru and other central communities which were hosting our preservice teacher education candidates on their international practicum. Supported by WUSC as part of the Student Refugee Program, I also had the opportunity to visit the three main refugee camps at Dada’ab, in eastern Kenya. Here I went to a number of both government and community schools serving the largest refugee camp in the world (over 300,000 residents) and met with students, teachers, and community leaders to discuss their educational needs.
